Pit-Fire Pottery Experiment
We will be experimenting with pit-firing ceramics. We have never done this before, so this event will be a collaborative experience! The pit, fuel, and firing schedule will be provided, and we encourage attendees to bring pots to fire.
The pots with the greatest chance of success in this primitive style of firing are pots with even walls, few protrusions, and high (up to 20%) grog. Some organic matter inclusions can apparently be beneficial as well. Pots should be bisqued or very, very dry if green. You are encouraged to bring pots with a few different clay compositions and styles, to see what works and what doesn’t work. You are encouraged not to bring pots that will break your heart if they break in firing.
